A visit to Stonewall Jackson’s Headquarters Museum is a must for Civil War enthusiasts. The Hudson River Gothic Revival-style house was built in 1854 and has been lovingly restored and furnished much as it was while Jackson led Confederate operations during the Civil War.

This home served briefly as General Jackson’s headquarters during the Valley Campaign of the Civil War from 1861 to 1862. Along with General Jackson, noted Confederate officer Turner Ashby, and cartographer Jed Hotchkiss, organized their battle plan in these rooms.

Among the hundreds of Civil War artifacts and memorabilia you will experience in this museum, including Jackson’s prayer book and camp table and Ashby’s revolver, is the beautifully reproduced gilded wallpaper donated in 1993 by actress, Mary tyler Moore. It was Ms.Moore’s great grandfather, Lt.Col. Lewis T. Moore’s who provided this home to Jackson and his wife during their stay in Winchester.

The museum, conveniently located beside the Visitor Center, is a wonderful example of early settlement life in the lower Shenandoah Valley. The house was built in 1754 and today is restored and furnished to reflect the style of that period.

As a lover of early American history, you’ll experience genuine antique furnishing and artifacts throughout this native limestone house, which originally served as Winchester’s first Quacker meeting house.

The house is the oldest in Winchester and has been witness to the town’s settlement, the formation of the United States, and the strife of the Civil War. You might even encounter one of the main house’s ghosts which have been known to wander the halls.

George Washington was a strong presence during the early settlement of Winchester. Prior to the Revolutionary War, he was twice elected to represent the citizens of the country in the Virginia House of Burgesses. It was here that the residents came to honor and respect the man who would become the first President of the United States.

It was in this small log cabin on the corner of Braddock and Cork Streets, between September 1755 and December 1756 that Washington kept an office while he supervised the construction of Fort Loudoun. It was Washington responsibility to protect the frontier from hostile Indians and the encroaching French.

Experience “George Washington and the West”, a new exibit at the museum. On display you will see Washington’s personal effects, surveying equipment and a scale model of Fort Loudoun under construction and the town of Winchester in 1755.
